Light Bags LoJack Your Handbag With GPS

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Navigation

Get a load of this racket. A company called Marilyn Light Bag has developed a series of purses equipped with a GPS tracker in the event that it is lost or stolen. A device, the product page claims, can not be deactivated by a thief. The real kicker here is that the first two months of GPS monitoring are free, with a $15 charge for each month thereafter. So, essentially you are paying for your purse in perpetuity—all in the hopes that you might be able to recover the bag if it should ever vanish (but the contents may be another story). Prices start at $30.

Cellphones Effect Brain waves

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Mobile Phones, Mobile gadgets

Scientific American Online reports on two recent studies, which suggest that the electromagnetic waves that emanate from cell phones may have an effect on basic brain function.

The authors are quick to note the studies don’t reveal necessarily damaging results from close and constant contact with a cell phone, but do say it can disrupt sleep in a way that’s similar to the effect of a half a cup of coffee. (The experiments apparently included no effort to compare the disruption to sleep patterns caused by vodka and Red Bull, but we digress.)

In short, the experiments revealed that the bioelectric impulses coursing through your noggin are indeed susceptible to the influence of a cell phone, although the scientists involved seem to see this as more of an opportunity to study how low level electrical impulses can be utilized to influence brain wave patterns. Nintendo DS Version of Guitar Hero Launching This June

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Electronics, Games, Mobile gadgets, Tech Companies

There’s not a lot of details on this one just yet, but Activison CEO Mike Griffith has dropped word in a earnings conference call that the company’s upcoming Guitar Hero: On Tour game/controller combo will not only be released on its own this June, but in a new Nintendo DS bundle as well. No word on a price, unfortunately, nor is there any indication that the DS itself will be undergoing any Guitar Hero-inspired changes, but it seems like those little details should be making themselves known soon enough. Microsoft’s XP for low-cost PCs defines some boundaries

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Uncategorized

While Microsoft has seen it fit to keep XP around as its “relatively non-bloated OS” alternative to the Linux that has dominated this new category of “ultra low-cost PCs” (ULPCs), they’re certainly not giving away the farm. Microsoft doesn’t want this version of XP Home creeping into mainstream laptops and desktops, where it might compete with Vista sales and high-margin machines from PC manufacturers. To that end, Microsoft is setting the limits for ULPCs at 10.2-inch screens, 80GB of storage, 1GB of RAM, 1GHz processors (with some exceptions) and no touchscreens. The upshot is that licenses for XP will go for $26 in developing nations and $32 elsewhere. Too bad the XP faithful among us will need to try a bit harder to wrangle XP onto new machines of theirs that don’t fit these narrow specifications

iPhone “Currently Unavailable” Online: Brilliant Pre 3G iPhone Strategy?

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Electronics, Mobile Phones, Mobile gadgets

The iPhone is "currently unavailable" at the AppleStore US, following the dry out in UK. Does this mean they are waiting for the shipment of the next version? If so, this is a brilliant and rare move for Apple.

We won’t know for sure until next month, but knowing Apple’s tight command of their stock levels, it looks like this may be the reason. But considering we’re almost exactly 30 days from the WWDC keynote, it could mean the 3G iphone is coming sooner than we think. Let’s assume this is what is happening. If so, this move is brilliantly kind and uncharacteristic of Apple. What they’re doing is trading off secrecy to protect people from buying the first-gen iPhone in its last days before its successor is unveiled. I mean, if you’d bought an iPhone and it was upgraded to v.2 days after your purchase, wouldn’t you be pissed? Maybe they’d rather short the sales for a month and not have to deal with thousands of pissed off customers. [Apple Store]

Sony Cybershot DSC-N2 Digital Camera

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Electronics, Mobile gadgets

The Sony Cybershot DSC N2 camera is Texas-big in a sub-compact package! It’s a 10.1 megapixel point-and-shoot camera with a 3X optical zoom and has a ton of manual controls you don’t normally get in a sub-compact camera.
The N2’s "bigness" comes not from its size in your pocket; it weighs just over 5 ounces and is roughly the size of a deck of cards. The N2’s "bigness" is all about the LCD. It sports a very generous 3-inch LCD that takes up most of the backside of the camera. As a result, the camera doesn’t have many buttons on it; almost all the controls are buried in touch screen menus on the LCD. You do get some really neat in-camera editing options with this camera including the ability to write on photos using the touch-screen and the included stylus.

PC gamers shun Vista, sticking with XP

May 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Tech Companies

One of Windows Vista’s biggest selling points was that it was the only way you could DirectX 10, the software component that would be required to play the very latest video games in their full glory. Sure, you could still play games in DirectX 9, but the differences with DirectX 10, Microsoft promised, would be striking. (Check out this video showing the same scene under both systems and you’ll see what Microsoft was talking about. You can find loads of similar comparisons online.)

Games like Crysis benefit clearly from the DX 10 upgrade, but that benefit hasn’t been enough to push gamers into upgrading to Vista. Historically, those are the very first computer users, living on the bleeding edge, to upgrade to new hardware and operating systems. The statistics from Valve , whose Steam system lets gamers download titles from the web and which collects system information in return, shows that Vista still has less than a 15 percent market share among these users.

That’s roughly in line with the total consumer market, but it’s a real surprise considering the advantages Vista’s DirectX 10 offers gamers. There’s no way to run DirectX 10 on XP, so the only way to get the very best PC gaming experience is to run Vista. They should theoretically be lining up to buy Vista in droves.

As well, if any computers are powerful enough to run Vista, it’s gamers’ rigs. Stocked with the latest CPUs, tons of RAM, and the latest video cards, few gamers would encounter the upgrade headaches that have frustrated the rest of the market due to not having the power to handle it.

Of course, that hasn’t happened. The figures imply that gamers may simply feel the advantages of a modest graphics upgrade just don’t outweigh the other headaches of Vista.

Will gamers eventually come to love Vista? Maybe it will take a truly killer game to finally get folks to upgrade. Of course, everyone thought that Crysis was going to be that title, so we’ll have to wait and see.
