Symbian: “Android’s stupid and for babies and dumb heads.”

May 14th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Electronics, Mobile Phones, Mobile gadgets

Nokia and Symbian were behind school yesterday and Nokia was smoking cloves and Symbian was reading some book and then Nokia as all like “Did you see what Google did?” and Symbian was like “Uh huh Whatdafuk?” and Nokia was all like “Garr garrr I’m Androad” and Symbian was all like “I’m Anchoad” and then Symbian was like:

“About every three months this year there has been a mobile Linux initiative of some sort launched.

“It’s a bit like the common cold. It keeps coming round and then we go back to business. We don’t participate in these full stop. We make our own platform and we are focused on driving that into the mobile phone market at large ever more aggressively.”

And the Nokia was like “Stuppppod!” and then both of them got busted coming back to class late and Nokia got suspended for smelling like smoke and they found his cloves.

Google Maps Adds Wikipedia Articles, Geotagged Photos, Real Estate Listings

May 14th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Breaking News, Tech Companies

Google Maps has just added even more information for your geographical perusal, including the option to place links to Wikipedia articles and geotagged photos from Panoramio on top of your maps. It’s a cool way to see shots of areas taken with a more artful eye than the Street View vans as well as check out info written by strangers and verified by nobody of authority. It’s also added real estate listings, which you can turn on under the “search options” link. The future is now! [Google Maps via Lifehacker]

Intelliscreen brings “Today Screen” functionality to iPhone

May 14th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Breaking News, Mobile Phones, Mobile gadgets

The iPhone lacks many things that have come to be taken for granted by many mobile enthusiasts. A functional “Today Screen” that displays at-a-glance information is one of the features that Apple failed to include in their first handset offering. But, that doesn’t mean the prolific iPhone developer community is going to sit idly by and accept Apple’s oversight.

Enter Intelliscreen. With a bit of jailbreak-magic, Intelliscreen puts calendar info, email, SMS text messages, news and weather right on the iPhone’s locked-screen - the “Slide To Unlock” screen, if you will. Intelliscreen displays the most recent data in categorized panes on your iPhone’s locked-screen. Each pane allows you to scroll through your information conveniently on the iPhone’s display, and gives you the option to launch the mail, SMS text message, calendar, etc. applications with a quick swipe through the information-pane.

You’ll need to jailbreak your iPhone to make Intelliscreen work - Then add the  http://www.intelliborn.com/repo/Intelli.plist” application repository to your Installer.app’s “Source” list (here’s how). Find “Intelliscreen” and install it, but be warned, this is beta software.

Aliph’s new Jawbone (the sequel) hands-on and unboxing

May 14th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Breaking News, Electronics, Mobile gadgets, Tech Companies

We got to spend a little bit of time with Aliph’s new Jawbone headset, and we’ll confess we’re a tad smitten. The headset is considerably smaller than its predecessor, and the improved earbud design gave us a comfortable fit right out of the box — with other options waiting in the wings. That old overly-complicated ear hook is gone in favor of a simple, slightly flexible one, clad in leather with the intention of an eventual worn-in feel, but thanks to the new light design we’re actually planning on going hook-less — we haven’t managed to shake it off yet, and have already probably caused considerable brain damage in the attempts. The interface is the same invisible one of its predecessor, but the first time you turn it on it’s in pairing mode so we had no trouble there. We’d be hard pressed to notice a sound difference either way, but that was never the original’s problem. The smaller design does mean a reduction in battery life, which could be a deal breaker for some, but if you’re not going to be yapping away constantly the new Jawbone is a useful bit of “earwear,” as Aliph would like to call it.
