Google just demoed Andriod at their IO event this afternoon, and man did they drop some bombs on us. The platform was amazing, we got a full screen demo, and even got to see the features like Google Maps, and the platform’s WebKit based web browser. One thing we did not get to know though, is what in the world is that device that they are running Android on?

Well, unfortunately for us, Google would not reveal that much information, they did however reveal some specifications on the device. It has a 528MHz Qualcomm CPU, most likely the MSM7201A, which is the same CPU found in the HTC Diamond. The device is UMTS, and has a capacitive touch screen thanks to Synaptics. The device demoed had 128MB of RAM, and was using 3.6mbps HSDPA during the demo.

specifications aside, there is more interesting information that was revealed during the Q&A. According to Google, the launch of Android is still on track for the second half of this year. Google also is not making any requirements for use, if your device is capable, go for it, seems to be the semi official response. Another interesting point is that Android will not require a touch screen, and will work with D-Pad, and even trackball controlled devices.

Google could not disclose who was the manufacturer of the prototype device, due to a non disclosure agreement. Also, that very interesting unlocking method would not require a touch screen, Google says that a navigation pad or trackball would work just as well. Check out the full video of the Q&A below.

From the slides you can see RIM is not sacrificing any of the BlackBerry experience on the KickStart. When it comes to making calls the KickStart will work like any other flip, and when it comes to messaging, flipping the KickStart open will be like pulling an existing BlackBerry Device model from its holster. As one would expect, you will be able to use the music player with the phone closed.

On the rumor end of things, we’ve received word that the BlackBerry KickStart will ultimately ship with OS version 5.0 (Bold owners will be able to upgrade from 4.6 to 5.0 when released).

Deutsche Telekom — the massive German telcommunications company that owns T-Mobile — is in the hot seat over allegations that its security department hired a private company to track phone conversations between member of its supervisory board and reporters, in an effort to uncover internal media leaks. This was during a dark period for the company — during 2005 and 2006 — when Deutsche Telekom was experiencing massive layoffs.

These revelations, first published in German newsweekly ‘Der Spiegel,’ recall similar events at Hewlett-Packard, which involved the company hiring investigators to obtain the personal phone records of journalists covering the company.

Privacy is still a hot button issue in Germany since the days of state sanctioned spying under the Communist and Nazi regimes. For its part, the German government, which owns a controlling 32 percent stake in the company, has called the operation a ” serious breach of trust.”

Deutsche Telekom has willingly turned the case over to prosecutors.”By handing over information to the prosecutor, we’re using the sharpest knife we have to solve the problem,” says company spokesman Mark Nierwetberg. “We’re not in any way trying to hide anything.”

This case comes at the same time as several other European privacy breaches, such as the posting of 38 million Italian citizens’ tax records, and the loss of two computer disks by British tax authorities that contained the financial records of approximately 25 million citizens.

And you thought only Americans spied on their own citizens and customers!

Opera Software has announced a “silent” update of its Opera Mini 4.1 web browser for BlackBerry and Palm device users.

With the new version (4.1.11355) of Opera Mini, BlackBerry users should now be able to only use WiFi. In addition, BIS might be working, though Opera Mini folks can’t guarantee that — it works on one of their two different service providers.

As for the Palm users, they should expect an improved image performance thank to better memory handling.

If you don’t use Palm or BlackBerry, you don’t really have to update.
