I have tested the iPhone Pwnage Tool 2.0 from the iPhone Dev team on my first generation iPhone. IT WORKS!

Please note that this tool will unlock, jailbreak, and update your first gen iPhone to firmware 2.0. It will also jailbreak your iPod touch and iPhone 3G. It will not unlock your iPhone 3G. I had absolutely no problems upgrading to 2.0 but remember you do so at your own risk.

Step 1

Download the Pwnage Tool

You can download the pwnage tool from the iPhone Dev team’s website. Their server load is very high right now so just be patient if it takes a bit of time.

Step 2

Connect your iPhone to the computer and open iTunes. A message will come up saying that a new version is available. Select ‘Download Only’. It will take a few minutes to download because the file size is over 200mb.

Step 3

Download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloaders

You can download them here.

Once extracted, you can just place the two files on your desktop. The program will tell you that the files are not found, select no, then it will let you browse for them.

Step 4

Open the Pwnage Tool. Select iPhone. The program will automatically find the ispw firmware file you downloaded from iTunes and the bootloaders you downloaded. A message will pop up asking “Are you a legit iPhone user? yes or no” Select no to unlock your iPhone, yes to not unlock it (legit means on AT&T…). The program will then build the custom firmware. It takes a few minutes so be patient. It will then ask if you have pwned your iPhone before. I used Ziphone last time so I hit no.

Step 5

Enter DFU mode

Follow the instructions on screen to enter DFU mode. If you don’t get it right, just try again.

Step 6

Restore your iPhone. Once this is done, you will be finished! This will take about 10 minutes.

Step 7

Test everything out to make sure it works but you are finished and enjoy firmware 2.0 unlocked!
