  • Mio Moov 380 GPS Can Make Calls, Send Text Messages
By Gadgetboy on June 26th, 2008 | No Comments Comments
Mio’s new Moov 380 GPS just passed through the FCC, complete with the ability to make/take phone calls and send/recieve SMS texts. The GPS unit comes with a SIM card slot, allowing for said cellular functions as well as an SD card slot for storage. In addition, the Moov 380 comes with a SIRFStarIII GPS chip and cellular data speeds would range between 2.75G and 3G. Because this needs a full voice plan from a wireless carrier to make use of the Moov’s features, I’m assuming you’re supposed to use the SIM card from the cellphone you already have. But would you go through ...
  • TomTom 7 for Windows Mobile Appearing on some Touch Diamond models
By Gadgetboy on June 21st, 2008 | No Comments Comments
A number of users at XDA-developers are reporting TomTom version 7 is including on their Touch Diamond models. The new version obviously supports the newer version 7 map sets. There is also a new “Help Me” menu that will guide you to help related services. Of special interest is a Quick Menu, that shows a large button on screen in the map view which you can customize to have one specific function, or bring up a secondary menu with a list of customized functions of your choosing. This makes it much easier to make things more accessible, like turning the sound off or switching to nig...

  • Garmin Nuvi phone will be made by ASUS
By Gadgetboy on June 18th, 2008 | No Comments Comments
Industry sources have confirmed that the Garmin Nuvifone will be manufactured by Asus, and the two have partnered together on the device for the past two years. This comes as a surprise to some familiar with Garmin, as the company has long put a strong emphasis on manufacturing its own products and never outsourcing. However, Garmin does recognize that the move into the mobile handset world is different than GPS devices alone, due to the large amount of RF technology expertise and validation work required to make mobile handsets possible. It looks like Asus’s main contribution to the projec...

By Gadgetboy on June 11th, 2008 | No Comments Comments
Telenav’s gas price feature allows users to use GPS to find which gas station near them has the cheapest gas. The service will search around your current location (or another location that you specify) and tell you what each gas station is charging that day. You can sort by cheapest, type of gas and/or brand. Then you can get turn-by-turn GPS directions to that station. This feature is included in all TeleNav GPS Navigator versions. Launch Telenav and it can be found under the Business Listings (POI search). (Screenshot a bit out dated, prices are almost double that now!) [Try Telenav Fr...
  • Giant bunny formed from GPS path
By Gadgetboy on May 31st, 2008 | No Comments Comments
First things first: considering the huge amount of press garnered by a recent position art scam, this here could indeed be just another spoof to get your hopes up. That being said, we’re pretty sure no one with any level of decency would do such a vile thing on Easter Sunday, which is precisely when the above bunny was purportedly created from waltzing about with a Magellan GPS and a digital camera. The artist himself admits that what you see above is a slightly cleaned-up version of the actual path, but we’re told that any edits that occurred had no huge bearing on the outcome...
  • GPS on the iPhone 3G Confirmed?
By Gadgetboy on May 30th, 2008 | No Comments Comments
We have all heard the rumours about whether or not GPS functionality will show up on the new iPhone, but according to GigaOM it is a done deal. Their confirmation is based on two factors: private sources that claim a GPS contract for the iPhone was awarded to Broadcom and legal requirements put in place last year by the FCC regarding Enhanced 911. Even though GigaOM is a reputable source, I’m not ready to buy into iPhone GPS just yet. Sources are sources and I’m pretty sure E911 doesn’t even need GPS. [GigaOM] Share and Enjoy: ...
