Google’s Android Market is here but where are the phones?

August 30th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Applications, Google-Android

After months of silence, Google is rapidly pushing its Linux-based Android mobile platform towards the finish line in preparation for a big fourth quarter launch. The recent SDK beta release offers a compelling look into what users can expect to see on upcoming Android hardware, but it left one critical question unanswered: how will third-party developers get their software onto end-user handsets?

HTC Dream is it really a dream with android running

August 10th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Firmware, HTC

The Boy Geniuses are reporting on some video which has surfaced on YouTube that claims to be the HTC Dream running Android, in awfully blurred but reasonably identifiable smartphonealicious action. Nothing even remotely like confirmation is out there but it looks consistent with rumors, and the Android functionality seems legit compared to what we have seen before. Auto-rotating screen, Sidekick style QWERTY, pretty good touch-screen…check, check, check. It seems awfully large to me, but who knows.

Take a look for yourself and see…is this just a YouTube pipe dream or Apple’s worst nightmare?

Google’s Andy Rubin Talks About Android

Google's Andy Rubin Talks About Android

Though there are plenty of videos and news of Google’s upcoming Android, it’s not often that they include Andy Rubin, Google’s Senior Director of Mobile Platforms.

Rubin demonstrated the non-touchscreen version of the platform, using a browser designed entirely for button-based navigation, as well as demonstrating the Android’s ability to multitask by using Google Maps seamlessly with a media player and photo app running in the background.

The hardware itself was still kept as a secret as usual, which is understandable, since that Android is designed to work on any phone with at least a 200MHz processor, and Google will be stressing the OS, (operating system) not so much the hardware.

Android to appear on HTC handsets this year, with WinMo 7 to follow

June 17th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Applications, Handsets

android htc prototype live image 1We’ve been hating on Windows Mobile pretty bad lately, but we don’t feel bad about it. It’s a bloated, crappy OS in need of a major overhaul. Sadly, it’s one of the only viable commercial smartphone operating systems out right now, which is why companies like HTC use it on their smartphones.

But that may be changing. One of the general managers at HTC let slip to an intrepid blogger that HTC was planning on releasing an Android-based phone by the end of the year.

Android is Google’s smartphone OS that many of us geeks are very excited about. Linux-based and open for development, the OS could be a great rival to Apple’s iPhone, and will possibly hasten the end of Windows Mobile’s dominance.

It’s entirely possible, despite being commited to Windows Mobile 7 next year, that HTC could retreat from WinMo completely in favor of Android. We wouldn’t be surprised if Android became HTC’s default OS early next year if its as popular as we think it’ll be. We hope that’s the way things go, though we hear nice things about WinMo 7, so it’ll be an interesting year.

Symbian: “Android’s stupid and for babies and dumb heads.”

May 14th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Electronics, Mobile Phones, Mobile gadgets

Nokia and Symbian were behind school yesterday and Nokia was smoking cloves and Symbian was reading some book and then Nokia as all like “Did you see what Google did?” and Symbian was like “Uh huh Whatdafuk?” and Nokia was all like “Garr garrr I’m Androad” and Symbian was all like “I’m Anchoad” and then Symbian was like:

“About every three months this year there has been a mobile Linux initiative of some sort launched.

“It’s a bit like the common cold. It keeps coming round and then we go back to business. We don’t participate in these full stop. We make our own platform and we are focused on driving that into the mobile phone market at large ever more aggressively.”

And the Nokia was like “Stuppppod!” and then both of them got busted coming back to class late and Nokia got suspended for smelling like smoke and they found his cloves.
