Replacing your BlackBerry with an E71? Hold that thought…

September 7th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Nokia, RIM-Blackberry

This is a post from a user "JP" on howardforums and it is kind of interesting .So I’ve forced myself to use an E71 for a day to see if it could replace my Blackberry and here are my findings.

Cons:

  • Not even half as many nifty shortcuts to navigate the O/S as a BB, thus, it’s not as efficient
  • Predictive text is a disaster. It’s good because it can replace little i’s with capital I’s but I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why it would predict the word "Satan" for "Batman", or "Sympathize" with "Empathize". The letters aren’t even close to each other so why on earth would someone type in keystrokes for batman if they really wanted satan? DUMB DUMB DUMB. Of course you can always turn it off but that’s besides the point.
  • On a RIM, typing a name or address in the TO: or CC: field will predict the nearest matching contact from the address book. Similar functionality is absent.
  • <BES ONLY>On a RIM, if the name you type in the TO: or CC: field doesn’t exist in the address book, you can instantly ‘retrieve’ the contact from the company’s GAL. No such functionality in Mail-4-Exchange. One is forced to open the separate GAL app, then download the contact and save it into one’s address book, then go back to the email app and retrieve the contact….. or you can just type out the full email address everytime -_-
  • RIM devices have a significantly cleaner and seamless ‘ back and restore ‘ feature as you move from device to device or get your device replaced under warranty. Nokia, take notes…
  • On the E71, I can only see 3 lines of subject matter when I open a contact’s profile. Considering that the first 2 lines are FIRST and LAST NAME, I can’t help but wonder, is this a joke?
  • I hate to say this but the E71 takes forever to regain a signal after dropping out of coverage. I’m not sure if it drops out of coverage anymore than an N95 or an 8800 but it is definitely more noticeable since it takes longer to recouperate. This may be a setting that tells the phone how often to look for signal and a battery preservation tactic, but nonetheless, it’s a disadvantage when you’re trying to make a call or send a text.
  • I get over 50 emails a day at work at least . On a BB, I can filter the emails that go to my berry so as not to overwhelm my device with daily reports and other junk. I’m not finding that option on Mail for Exchange. Am I missing something?
  • The bottom row of keys beginning with "Z" seems to be off a notch. The Z is directly under the A so when you’re instinctively trying to access keys, you’ll usually select the wrong one. This may be something that one can get used to after weeks or months of use but it is almost contrary to everything else out there.
