Gameloft bringing Death Race to mobiles

August 12th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Applications, Games

Death Race Gameloft has recently announced a licensing agreement with Universal Pictures Digital Platforms Group to develop and publish the official mobile game of the upcoming blockbuster - Death Race.

Pushing the limits of the mobile racing game, Gameloft’s Death Race captures the full throttle action of the film’s dystopian world in which the most extreme racing competition has emerged and its contestants are murderous prisoners. Race in one of the film’s seven “Steel Beasts,” each one with a different play style and armed to the teeth. Armor up and throttle down for the game’s five-episode “Story Mode,” which runs a gauntlet of challenges ranging from “Race,” “Rampage,” “Eliminator,” “Shooter” and “Boss Battles”-featuring a mix of shooting and racing. Complete the “Story Mode” and unlock the “Single Race Mode,” which allows fans to blast through all of the Death Race tracks and challenges.

Of course, as the game progresses, you will unlock new cars and even better weapons, while your opponents will become better at the same time…

In a nutshell, we expect tons of action driving fun later in the month, when Death Race will be launched on all major carrier decks. As for the movie, it’s opening in theaters is scheduled for August 22nd.

Doom 2 and Wolfenstein RPGs May Be Heading to the iPhone

August 1st, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Apple, Applications

John Carmack had a version of the Doom 2 and Wolfenstein RPGs in mind when he recently said that id Software was bringing something “very special” to the iPhone, but CEO Todd Hollenshead has revealed that he would like to bring both of these games to the device, which he claims is more powerful than a DS and PSP combined. The software is already being worked on for other platforms, but Hollenshead admits that it is too early to tell whether the games will be ported to the iPhone.

The small team at id means that the company can only work on one game at a time, so they are toying with the idea of pairing up with a publishing partner to get a game running on the iPhone. However, Hollenshead is taking a cautious approach. He explains that games on the iPhone “are going to be competing with all of those other things you can do on the iPhone that are pretty cool” and that “It does raise the bar on what you need to do from a game standpoint.”

So, when analyzing statements from Carmack and Hollenshead together, it seems that id Software definitely wants to bring games to the iPhone, but the two leaders have different viewpoints on the situation. Carmack is gung-ho and talking exclusive titles that are a “graphical tour de force” while Hollenshead is cautious and talking about porting titles that are already in development. We will just have to wait and see who gets their way. [Kotaku]

Xbox Pro for $299.99 at target stores

July 11th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Electronics, Toys

The Xbox 360 price drop has pretty much gone official, with Target offering an in-store price of $299.99. The only thing weird about this is that it’s not the rumored 60GB version that we thought was coming, so it’s possible that Target is just clearing out old inventory for the new SKU? We won’t know anything for certain until someone from Microsoft gets up on stage and says it. Or until they put out a press release. [Target]

Nintendo Game & Watch

We’re not about to judge Andy Cole or Michael Panayiotakis, two collectors who have all 60 Game & Watch handhelds ever produced. New in box. Untouched by human hands. So why did they do it? Because they could, we suppose. In an interview by DS Fanboy, the two Game & Watch collectors are deconstructed and investigated, revealing such nuggets as once spending $1,200 on a boxed Super Mario Bros. Gartner Says Worldwide Mobile Gaming Revenue to Surpass $4.5 Billion in 2008

June 29th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Games, News

Worldwide mobile gaming revenue is on pace to total $4.5 billion in 2008, a 16.1 percent increase from 2007 revenue of $3.9 billion, according to Gartner, Inc. While mobile gaming revenue will continue to lag behind other value-added entertainment services - such as music and adult content - the market still has much potential.

sony-ericsson-f305-press-38

“Although current consumer interest in, and usage of, mobile gaming is generally low, the potential for growth remains lucrative, with the market skewed toward lower-income segments, mobile workers and smartphone and personal digital assistant (PDA) users,” said Tuong Huy Nguyen, principal analyst at Gartner.

“The fact that mobile gaming provides good value for the money is one reason for the healthy growth rate,” Mr. Nguyen said. “For a relatively small sum, consumers can enjoy a game over and over again, which is particularly relevant in emerging economies where penetration of consoles and PCs is lower. Video games in their original versions (on PCs or consoles) represent a form of entertainment recognized across a wide population, while portable consoles have also taken the market a step towards gaming on a mobile device. Finally, game publishers and mobile operators are getting better at working together and becoming more active in the mobile gaming space.”

Gartner predicts that mobile gaming revenue will experience a compound annual growth rate of 10.2 percent between 2007 and 2011 with worldwide end-user spending reaching $6.3 billion in 2011. Analysts said mobile operators and other game providers should build usage by offering game demos or advertising-funded games.

The Asia/Pacific region (including Japan) represents by far the largest market for mobile gaming, with end-user spending forecast to total $2.3 billion in 2008 and reach $3.4 billion by 2011. The mobile-game market has outshone the PC and console game market in the emerging territories of Asia largely because of the low penetration of PCs compared with that of mobile devices. India is expected to lead among Asian countries in terms of total mobile gaming revenue generated, with the 2007 figure at approximately $80 million. This is forecast to reach $450 million by 2012.

“Emerging market operators should make the most of the demand for mobile games and the low PC penetration in these regions and push game sales as a viable, albeit imperfect, lower-cost substitute to PC and console games,” said Madhusudan Gupta, senior analyst at Gartner.

The mobile gaming market in Western Europe is expected to grow from $701 million in 2008 to $862 million by 2011. The North American market is projected to grow from $845 million to approximately $1.2 billion in 2011. The gap between North American and Western European mobile-gaming revenues is expected to widen over the forecast period as more users in North America adopt mobile data services in general.

8-lane Salextric slot-car racing track

8-lane Salextric slot-car racing track
Many a kid has played with their slot car race track and watched as their racer zipped through the curves and straightaways only to be dislodged and careen off the track. It never gets old even as we age. It’s just that when you grow up, you need a bigger track. And in this case 8 whole lanes of fun.

This thing is no joke either. It’s not some cheap plastic toy. Instead it’s quality made, going so far as to prevent power-supply faults and even car-derailing bumps, which leaves you free to enjoy the race. All you have to do is clear the necessary real estate and invite a bunch of friends over. It beats playing this slot car game.

Aftermarket Xbox 360 case, quiet, cool, & fat
Is your Xbox 360 too loud? Is it hot and just too compact for you? The Lian-Li PC-XB01 case mod will let you rest easy. The case is like a silencer for the disc drive thanks to sound-proofing foam. It also has great airflow to keep things chill via a 120mm fan or optional water cooling system.

And if you like a console that’s got some extra cushion for the button pushin’, this case is about four times the size of the 360. No pricing yet, but it should be available this August.

Gameloft’s Real Football 2008: European Tournament set to compete with EA’s Euro 2008

June 11th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Applications, Games

Real Football 2008: European Tournament

Gameloft may not have the official license as EA does, but that doesn’t stop them from releasing the unofficial version of the football/soccer simulation just in time for the Euro 2008.

The so called Real Football 2008: European Tournament is clearly designed to go head to head with EA’s official Euro 2008 mobile game, and from what we can tell, it will be a tough choice to make which game to play.

There’s more than 200 teams to play with (clubs included), as well as four stadiums to play in. 3D graphics and TV-style presentation are there to make the gameplay more appealing, and the new artificial intelligence will make sure your team-mates and opponents adapt to your playing style. I’m not sure how that works, but I know one thing - screenshots promise a lot of fun! Yeah, I’ll try this one, as well…

Third-party apps and games built from iPhone SDK showcased

June 9th, 2008 by Gadgetboy | No Comments | Filed in Games

Along with Apple’s new 3G iPhone, a slew of iPhone SDK-made apps will debut. Some of these are expected to be free, while the rest will be made available for a price that only developers can determine. So far, there have been a few interesting apps showcased, with useful clients, utilities and games.

The first app that was demoed on stage in WWDC 2008 was Super Monkey Ball from Sega. This version includes a total of 110 stages and all four classic monkeys of the game. A racing game called CroMag Rally and some type of adventure game from Digital Legends Entertainment were also demoed, all taking advantage of the iPhone’s built-in sensors such as the accelerometer.

It’s interesting to note that more games like these will be coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch as the new software is released (iPhone 2.0), giving Apple a competitive start on the portable gaming market now being owned by Nintendo and Sony with the DS and PSP respectively.

Along with the games, the iPhone SDK will also bring a native eBay bidding client called “Auctions,” a local news-retrieval client from Associated Press, a social-networking app called Loopt, and a native blogging app for TypePad users.

So far, all the iPhone apps look good, but not all of them are free. The three games earlier mentioned will cost $9.99 each. This is Apple’s first foray into the portable gaming market, but judging from the demoes, the pricing isn’t so bad.
